I was diagnosed with epilepsy in January and have been taking Dilantin since march (I tried Tegretol first but it didn’t work for me and made me really tired).
In the 4 or so months since I have been on it 2 of my liver enzyme levels have jumped from normal to near the 400s (anything over 50 is bad/undesirable). My thyroid has also started to ‘go bad’ (sorry, I don’t know all the medical terms). It was fine before (about 2) but now it’s around 9.5.
I have to get another blood test in a week and a half which will decide what happens from there.
But my main question is: Does hypothyroidism cause appetite loss? My doctor only told me that it can make you tired and make it hard to lose weight or can cause weight gain.
I have no problem with weight gain or losing weight, at least not yet, since my weight has stayed the same (even though I haven’t been very healthy in the last week because there were lots of celebrations happening – and no, I do not drink alcohol). I have been not hungry though, although I have been eating. I find that I am full on half the amount of food I use to eat, and I don’t really have any motivation to eat too. Some days I notice that I only had a yogurt for breakfast and then it’s 4pm and I haven’t eaten anything (and still not hungry at 4pm). I lose track of time with my study, so I’m not intentionally forgetting to eat, I just lose track of time.
I am, however sleepy in the afternoon, but when I go to bed I am finding it hard to switch off and go to sleep. Once I’m asleep though, I could easily sleep 9 – 12 hours if I don’t set an alarm!
So, could the thyroid thing be causing this?
